Objective…do you need one?

Like everything else about a resume, this is debatable.

I say you don’t need an objective if you are applying to a specific position and include a cover letter.

If you are posting a resume to an employer database, job board or just sending out to a company you know hire for the type of position you are looking for, but don’t necessary have an opening, you should include a very detailed objective.

A detailed objective should include the type of position, as well as the industry you are looking to get into. For instance, for the position I currently hold, my objective would go something like this “A student focused position in an accredited institution of higher learning.”
